Audrey
Classical movies and photographs have always inspired me. This portrait is based on an old black and white Audrey Hepburn image that immediately catch my eyes for the delicacy and simplicity of the photo itself. The image has been made with Maya 8.0 and rendered with Mental Ray. I’ve painted the textures in Photoshop but the final result has no photoshop touch ups but some little contrast and color enhancement. My goal was to achieve a mix of real and illustration look. Starting from the modeling of the Audrey 3D character in a standard T pose and ending with the sitting pose that you can see in the final render I will try to show you the main steps of the making of this image.

We’re going to explore a few of these aspects and the advantages you’ll acquire from using the Tablet.

Charmland
This photo is part of a series named Charmland and is a refreshing change from my regular and more dramatic style. The goal is to create an appealing image that carries happiness and cuteness. Attention will be especially given to image quality and aesthetics, while keeping the picture as clean and simple as possible.

Selective Color Adjustment
Often times working with images requires color changes and adjustments. Sometimes subtle changes like tweaking the skin tone or eye color are all that are required. Other times more dramatic changes are needed. But either way, I find myself literally wanting to reach into the image and change a specific color (or colors) while leaving others completely unchanged. Of course, I could do this by creating a selection and using various color controls to get the color I want. But that can be tedious and time consuming and may be hard to blend into the overall image. Fortunately there is great plug-in for making such spot changes – Color Mechanic Pro from Digital Light & Color. Here I will show some examples of the power and efficiency of this useful tool.

Soul Garden
Creating a surrealistic picture that looks like that nice book-illustration, you’ve always wanted to make yourself!
The image is a combination of three different programs. The figures were created with Poser 6.0, the fractal I made with Chaos pro 3.2, Freeware you can find on the internet. I used it to create a planet. The clouds I used are taken from a digital picture I made myself. Composing of the whole picture was done in Photoshop.

Turning a 3D rendering into an illustration
3D renderings can often look cold and impersonal or even cartoonish. They can also appear too crisply detailed. This can cause viewers to concentrate on specific details when they should be focusing on a more general idea or concept. With the techniques covered in this tutorial you will be able to turn your 3D renderings into hand drawn looking illustrations.
